Winter....

Posted by Lewis White on

Winter 2016 is pretty much over.....such as it was.  Unseasonably warm with intermittent days of cold.  Sort of like riding a temperature roller coaster.  After the drought last year, we had hoped to be able to re-seed the pastures but the early spring temps haven't given us that opportunity.  Here's hoping that nature can repair itself and we have lush grass for the spring lambs.  Winter was spent gathering eggs.  These silly birds of ours didn't realize they were supposed to slow down the egg production during winter.  Every month the egg tally has grown by 100.  (Not kidding about...

Preparing for Fall.....

Posted by Lewis White on

Fall is officially here and we haven't had rain in.....I don't remember.  What little ground we gained in rainfall we have lost twice over.  Way too early to start feeding hay but that's exactly what we are doing.  Problem is that hay is in very short supply locally and what is available is junk.  Mrs. LB has always argued that if you have to clean half the weight of the bale off the ground as waste, you didn't save any money buying those cheapo light weight bales.  Over the years I've heard that lecture many times (complete with dry erase...

Thoughts about rain and summer trivia....

Rain.  Seems like in the last 10 years or so that you either get way too much (thoughts and prayers to Texas and West Virginia) or none at all.  Right now, we are in the none at all category.  Pastures are burning up and the water bill is climbing.  Luckily at this point we are not included in the latest water contamination scare but it's too close for our comfort.  We have contemplated a water purification system off and on for years but it seems like we need to give some hard thought to it and quickly.  Trouble is that...

Robbed at Maryland Sheep Festival....

Posted by Lewis White on

Thank you to all our customers and friends!  It's always a rush of stress and worry getting ready for the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival.  Somehow, when I get there and visit with everyone it's all worth it.  After a hectic day, I call home and tell Mrs. Little Barn who I saw or talked to, what's new in their lives or that I saw someone we hadn't spoken with in ages.....I answer a thousand questions as she calls the roll of names......people we have known from festivals all over the eastern U.S.......then we discuss what folks are doing with...
